  • Your health care provider may recommend that you take ampicillin if you have a bacterial infection. This guide explains how Medicare coverage for ampicillin works.

Bacterial infections can make you feel unwell, so you'll want to get the medication you need as soon as possible. When you're feeling ill, knowing you can cover the cost of your antibiotics can be reassuring. So, does Medicare cover ampicillin?

What Is Ampicillin Used For?

Ampicillin is a type of antibiotic containing penicillin. It works by eliminating the bacteria that cause certain infections, including meningitis, sinus infections and urinary tract infections. It's ineffective against illnesses caused by viruses.

Ampicillin is only available via prescription and comes in capsules or liquids. Doctors determine the daily dosage and treatment length, depending on your age and the type and severity of the infection. Even if you feel well, continue taking ampicillin as directed until you use up all the medicine. If you stop taking ampicillin before the end of the course, your symptoms may return. Failing to complete a course of antibiotics can also contribute to the problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Ampicillin Side Effects

Some people are allergic to ampicillin and other medications containing penicillin. It can interact with certain medications and may cause the following side effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash or hives
  • Itchy skin
  • Breathing difficulties

Does Medicare Cover Ampicillin?

All Medicare Part D plans cover ampicillin. Medicare Advantage enrollees are also eligible if their plan has prescription drug benefits. Coverage is often unrestricted, meaning your insurer won't usually ask for prior authorization or limit how much your doctor can prescribe.

Insurance companies selling Medicare Advantage plans don't have to offer coverage beyond the benefits provided by Original Medicare (Parts A and B.) However, many of the best Medicare Advantage policies offer enhanced benefits, such as prescription coverage and dental care.

You won't have coverage for ampicillin if you have Original Medicare only. Therefore, many enrollees purchase a Part D plan from a private insurer to supplement their coverage.

How Much Does Ampicillin Cost With Medicare?

Ampicillin's costs depend on several factors, including which pharmacy you use and where you live. However, most people pay somewhere between $18 and $27 for 28 500-milligram capsules. You could consider subscribing to a discount coupon service to save money on ampicillin and other prescription medications.

You're responsible for paying for your ampicillin prescription until you meet your deductible. After that, your insurance covers your medication costs. Many providers offer free ampicillin coverage during the post-deductible stage. If your insurer charges co-pays for ampicillin, you'll usually pay around $1 or less.
