Does Humana Medicare Cover Incontinence Supplies?

In this article...
  • Some Humana Medicare Advantage plans may be able to help cover incontinence supplies or other over-the-counter health products and medicines. Learn more about Medicare coverage and incontinence supplies.

Incontinence supplies are not typically covered by Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B). Some Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) plans – such as Medicare Advantage plans offered by Humana – can cover certain incontinence supplies and/or over-the-counter items.

Plans that cover OTC items or incontinence supplies might not be available where you live, however.

Costs and benefits for Medicare plans like Humana Medicare Advantage plans may vary from one plan to the next, so it’s important to compare the benefits offered by each type of Medicare Advantage plan available where you live.

How Does Humana Medicare Cover Incontinence Supplies?

Humana Medicare Advantage plans that include coverage of over-the-counter (OTC) health products may typically charge a coinsurance payment for the product. This coinsurance represents your share of the cost, while the plan pays the remainder of the balance. There may or may not be an annual deductible that you have to meet before your plan coverage kicks in for over-the-counter supplies.

Some Humana Medicare Advantage plans may include a network of participating doctors, pharmacies and providers who accept the plan. The plan network may restrict you to certain pharmacies or stores within a selected geographic area. Some PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) Medicare Advantage plans may have fewer network restrictions than some HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan, though you should check with your plan provider to find out more details.

Does Humana Cover OTC Products?

Some Humana Medicare Advantage plans may also help pay for some other OTC health products. Plan benefits can vary from one location to the next, however, so not all plans will offer OTC benefits.

Are Incontinence Supplies covered by Medicare?

Original Medicare does not cover incontinence supplies or adult diapers.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans are sold by private insurance companies like Humana. These plans cover all of the same services and items that are included under Original Medicare and can also include additional benefits not covered by Medicare Part A or Part B.

The most popular benefits Medicare Advantage plans may offer can include prescription drug coverage, dental care, vision care and over-the-counter medications and health-related items.

Medicare Advantage plans that include that offer an allowance for over-the-counter health items may help pay for many of the products sold on the shelves of pharmacies. These products may include incontinence supplies like adult diapers and briefs, bladder control pads or pull-ons.

Medicare Coverage of Related Supplies

While Medicare does not cover incontinence supplies, it does help cover external catheters for beneficiaries with urinary incontinence or urinary retention. Medicare coverage can also extend to related supplies such as drain bags, irrigation kits, leg bags and extension tubing.

Because Medicare Advantage plans are required by law to cover all of the same services and items included in Original Medicare, Humana Medicare Advantage plans will also provide coverage for catheters and related supplies that would otherwise be covered by Original Medicare.
